28 Years of Stonemountain & Daughter in Berkeley In 2009 Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics celebrated its 28th anniversary and the 90th anniversary of the Steinberg family’s involvement in the fabric business: That's 28 years of excellent customer service, unique and extensive fabric selections and affordable prices.
April 7, 2009 (Berkeley, CA) -- Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics is celebrating its 28th Anniversary of continuous business in downtown Berkeley, CA. But they are even more excited to mark a bigger milestone. This year is the Steinberg family’s 90th year of selling fabric in the state of California. Come enjoy their great customer service, legendary selection and affordable prices. In addition to fabric, yarn and notions, Stonemountain and Daughter also offers a wide array of sewing, knitting and design classes that cater to all levels of sewing enthusiasts.
Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics is owned and operated by Bob and Suzan Steinberg, father and daughter, and they are the third and fourth generation of their family selling fabric in California. Bob’s grandfather, father and uncle founded Steinberg and Sons in 1919 in Los Angeles. Bob opened one of the first hippie fabric stores in the Sixties called Bob Steinberg’s Fabric Emporium in West Hollywood and then went on to open Stonemountain Fabrics in Pacific Grove and Watsonville in the Seventies. (Steinberg loosely translates to Stonemountain.) In 1981 he and Suzan teamed up and opened Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics in Berkeley. Their family business has been dedicated to supplying wonderful fabrics at the best prices for many generations. The store has grown over the years and is one of the premier fabric stores in the country. They were recently voted the #1 fabric store in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Fifteen years ago there were many small fabric stores in every community, and now there are few left. The large fabric store chains helped to bring about their demise with frequent 40% off sales and heavily discounted patterns that drove many independents out of business. These giant chains then couldn't make a profit on the fashion-quality fabrics that they once sold, and now they're focusing on lower end fabrics and variety supplies. So often you hear, "All I have near me is a large chain store", and we all nod in understanding. The Steinbergs are grateful for the support of the community in helping them to still be here, better than ever.
Be sure to come in to Stonemountain and Daughter and help celebrate this milestone anniversary. With shipments coming in nearly every day you’ll find something new each visit. They have fabric to inspire every generation and their experienced and friendly staff would love to help with your next project.
