Suzan's Helpful Hints archived 4/11/06

Can you tell me how I can sew stretch velvet panne fabric with a conventional sewing machine (not a serger or overlock machine)? I know it can be done - I just don't know what kind of needle, thread, tension, etc. to use. Please send me any instructions or any ideas you may have. Thanks

1. for a stretch panne velvet use either a sharp new lightweight woven needle or a ball point needle (usually labelled forknits). You may try both on a scrap of your panne to see which works best with your machine.

2.Thread: We recommend a good quality 100% polyester thread - something like Gutterman or Mettler.

3. Tension: If you are sewing a knit panne velvet, use a very slight (almost straight) zig zag stitch and loosen your tension just a little. This will give your seam enough slack to allow for the stretch. Try this method on a scrap before you start sewing your garment to test this for yourself.

Also, if you live in the area, you can register for one of our apparel sew labs and have lots of help

Thanks and bye for now
