Suzan's Helpful Hints

Did you ever need to estimate how much fabric you need to make your own bias tape for that special project? Here's a handy chart to help you the next time that question comes up.

Estimating Bias Yield

This chart will help you to estimate how many individual bias strips can be cut from 1 yd. of fabric. Five handy cutting widths for bias strips are given.

The cutting widths include 1/2" for turning under each raw edge 1/4" and an additional 1/4" for removing the slack:

*Strips cut 11/4"  wide can be used for 1/4" double-fold bias binding or 1/2" single-fold bias tape.

*Strips cut 13/4"  wide can be used for 1/2" double-fold bias binding or 1" single-fold bias tape.

*Strips cut 21/4"  wide will cover 1/4" cable cord for welting or make 3/4" double fold bias binding.
*Strips cut 23/4"  wide can be used for 1" double-fold bias binding or 2" single-fold bias tape.
*Strips cut 33/4"  wide can be used to cover 3/4" cord for welting.
1 yd. of fabric yields approximately this amout of bias strips (pieced separately).
