About Our Teaching Staff
Bonnie Allen has been an inspiring sewing teacher and custom tailor in the East Bay Area for the past 30 years. She brings to her students a special mix of experience, talent and passion for sewing. She majored in sewing and tailoring in school and continues her sewing education by attending seminars and taking as many classes as possible. Please join Bonnie in the many new classes she is offering here at Stonemountain & Daughter.
Sharon Bell began her fashion career sewing and designing for clients on the East Coast. Later she taught at the American College for the Applied Arts in Los Angeles, chaired the Fashion Production Department at the Academy of Art College, and directed the Fashion Department at the America Intercontinental University. She presently teaches part time at the College of Alameda. Sharon loves sharing her knowledge with others in any way that she can.
Tara Arnold is a custom dressmaker, pattern designer and a great sewing teacher in Berkeley. Tara has spent many years studying textiles and techniques in India and now specializes in ethnic fabrics and Issey Miyake designs. Her classes are very popular and we like to keep the workshops small, so please sign up early. Stop by the store to look at the sample garments from each of the classes.

Sandra Betzina hosts "Sew Perfect" airing on Home & Garden TV, writes a syndicated sewing column called "Power Sewing" and featured articles for Threads, Vogue patterns, Sew Beautiful and Australian stitches magazines, and recently designed a line of patters for Today’s Fit by Vogue and 4 embroidery cards for Amazing Designs. Sandra has written 5 books and created 12 instructional videos. A knack for uncovering techniques the home sewer craves has made Sandra a sought-after national lecturer and guest on TV shows across the country.

Fred Bloebaum (a woman with a man’s nickname) is a popular sewing instructor from Oakland and a favorite here at Stonemountain & Daughter. Her well-organized classes are filled with great techniques, fabulous instruction and lots of inspiration. Many of Fred’s classes feature garments made from her pattern line, Clothing Designs by La Fred. These elegant designs are easy to sew and contain clear, concise directions, which Fred passes on to her students.

jbsma../jpg Julianne Bramson developed her love for clothing as artistic self expression at a very young age. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Home Economics with concentrations in Fashion Design and Art History. In 2004 Julianne, with partner Janet Manning, started Decades of Style Pattern Company with the goal of bringing back gorgeous vintage styles of the 20th century to inspire all sewers to express themselves creatively! Julianne left Decades of Style Pattern Company in 2007 and now focuses on teaching and spreading a love of sewing as an avenue for creative self expression!
Jean Cacicedo is a nationally renowned textile artist who has been a prime innovator in the Wearable Art movement for over two decades. Her felted, pieced and dyed coats have been exhibited throughout the US, Europe and Japan.
Alice Elliot received her degree in Apparel Design and Production and Fashion Merchandising. She has run a home-based sewing business for several years and has costumed local ballet, modern dance, theater and opera companies. Recently she was assistant to the instructor of costume design at Mills College working with students of all levels in sewing technique.
Diane Ericson is an artist, designer and creativity coach living in the Monterey peninsula. Diane is a nationally known sewing teacher and has co-authored and published a series of workbooks on fiber arts, sewing and design and has been contributing to Threads Magazine as an author since the mid 80’s. My stencil line is different from traditional stencils in that I create collections of shapes for the person printing to build their own design with. using this approach, plus stacking and printing through several at a time, there are really unlimited ways to use the same stencils and get unique results every time!"

Dianna LaFerry is a professional illustrator and designer with an overwhelming passion for crochet, knitting, textiles, and garment sewing. She has been sewing her own clothes and crocheting like mad for over 20 years, during which time she has also been a professional seamstress, graphic art director, and fine artist. Dianna is thrilled to bring her expertise in color, compositon, and craftsmanship to Stonemountain as manager of the Yarn Department, in-house illustrator for the store, and crochet instructor.

Catherine Hounshell is a local artist, teacher and entrepreneur involved in Fiber Arts for the past 15 years. She can be found teaching at various local colleges and retail shops in our area. She loves to share her passion for vintage techniques in manipulating ribbon. With all the beautiful ribbon around, how can you resist?
Jane Foster is a very experienced sewing teacher. She has a teachers diploma for dressmaking, tailoring and is a professional color and image consultant. Her love of fabric, teaching and color work together as she helps people make and choose the right clothes. Her classes on Fitting have become a valuable part of our program. Ann Tarabini is a quilting instructor who teaches beginning and intermediate level quilting classes in the public school system (adult ed.) and in local shops. As a K-12 teacher, she has been teaching sewing skills to students in home economics and after school programs for over 25 years.

Terri Travis-Lewis is an enthusiastic and experienced sewing instructor. She is currently teaching Fashion Design courses at Brooks College in Sunnyvale. Terri also has taught pattern drafting and draping at FIDM, and Academy of Art College in S.F. Terri has had her own custom sewing business and is currently a freelance clothing designer. Her expertise in sewing, draping and fabric qualifies her as an outstanding instructor.

  Terry Mc Clintock has loved sewing since the age of 10. After graduating from San Jose State University in 1982 with a degree in Textiles and Clothing, she spent several years in retail as a Trainer and Buyer. For the past 14 years, Terry has shared her passion for Sewing and Serging through out the Bay Area. She loves to see her students enjoy sewing as much as she does.
  Lisa Levaggi Rich is a motivating sewing teacher who has received her degree in Apparel Design and Tailoring. She is a member of the Professional Association of Custom Clothiers and currently operates a custom clothing business. She also teaches pattern drafting for Pleasant Valley Adult School.
Bertha Underwood is an East Bay artist and teacher specializing in hat making and designing accessories for creating your special look. She also currently teaches at the Pleasant Valley Adult School.
Carrie Besso became passionate about Sashiko as an embellishment for wearable art after taking a class with fiber artist Nancy Shriber five years ago. She has recently studied with Bess Chin, a Master Sashiko Teacher in Berkeley, which has enriched her knowledge and understanding of this ancient Japanese quilting technique. Sashiko, originally used for reinforcing and repairing clothes, has evolved into beautiful hand quilting. Carrie's love of Sashiko has translated itself into a number of garments using this art form and an extensive collection of books on Sashiko. She started sewing with 4H at the age of 10, and now some years later, she is incorporating her extensive knowledge of sewing with her Sashiko designs.
