CLASSES: Garment Construction Techniques

#202 Garment Construction Techniques
With Instructor Terry McClintock
$140 class fee / 3 sessions
*$10 kit fee to instructor due at time of class
Prerequisite: Beginning Sewing 101 or equivalent experience

Seam finishing, hems, zippers, facings, pockets, darts, waistbands, buttons and buttonholes. These are the basic techniques you use over and over again in clothing construction. You will learn the steps that the pattern instructions omit, and gain deeper understanding of the skills you need to make high quality garments. The instructor will demonstrate technique, and then you will do it yourself in class. Because you'll have all your questions answered, knowledge of these techniques will stay with you!

#204 Open Sewing Session Labs
Bring your own project and get help from a pro!
3 hour session - $30
Prerequisite: Basic sewing machine skills -
(equivalent to classes #50, #80, or #101). Ages 16+.

Is there a class that you don’t see, a garment you want to make, or a simple home decorating project you’d like a hand with? Our Open Sewing Session Labs are designed just for you! Simply sign up for as many sessions as you need for your project. These classes offer the most flexibility and choice to help you sew, sew, sew! If you are stuck on a project, having fitting problems, want to learn specific techniques, need inspiration, need help with finishing or just want an experienced instructor at your side, sign up for a Lab! A perfect way to finish up a project started in another class. Focus on fitting, cutting, technique, tailoring, home-decoration projects -anything!! Small classes allow our instructors to support many different skill levels.

#307 Seams Essential!
With Instructor Tara Arnold

Prerequisite: Basic sewing machine skills -
(equivalent to classes #50, #80, or #101). Ages 16+.

A great class for everyone! In this workshop you will make a sample book of seams, including Flat Felled Seams, Hong Kong Finish, French Seams and London Finish. Bring fabric scraps, sewing tools and a notebook. Seam samples are on display in the store upstairs in our classroom.

#311 Fearless Zippers

Prerequisite: Basic sewing machine skills -
(equivalent to classes #50, #80, or #101). Ages 16+.


Stop the frustration now with this incredibly helpful workshop. If you know how to sew, but want to achieve better results by learning how to apply a professional-looking zipper, this is the right class for you. This sample-making class will feature three different types of zipper applications. You’ll put railroad, lapped and invisible zippers into a mock skirt with a waistband. You’ll also set these 3 zipper styles into the bodice of a garment, sewing the facing at the same time (as it is done in the industry). A fly-front zipper for pants will also be featured.

#361 Hand Sewing Techniques with Instructor Carrie Besso

All Skill Levels / Beginner +

Do you ever wonder what needle or thread to use after making the decision to sew by hand? This information along with demonstrations of stitches and the when and where to use these techniques will provide you with valuable information that will enhance and
increase your enjoyment of sewing by hand. Stitches to be covered include diagonal, basting, the difference between the slipstitch and fell stitch, covered snaps, and hem finishes. Carrie will demonstrate techniques for the different stitches and students will practice the stitches on instructor-provided, pre-cut fabric. Put together a binder with a page to describe each stitch and application you learn to give you a resource for the future. Kit fee to instructor $15 Includes binder, instruction pages in sheet protectors, pre-cut samples and needles.

#362 Basic Sewing Stitches and Mending by Hand
with Instructor Carrie Besso

All Skill Levels / Beginner +

Learn how to sew on buttons and snaps without worrying about losing them and without using lots of thread! Use a backstitch to fix a broken seam or to mend a crotch seam, use a blanket stitch to secure a patch to mend a small hole or worn areas. These and other basic sewing stitches such as knotting, needles, thread, hem stitches will be covered in this class with demonstrations and making samples to create a binder for future reference. Kit fee to instructor $15 includes binder, instruction pages in sheet protector, pre-cut samples, needle, buttons, and snaps.

#364 Basic Sewing Stitches and Mending by Hand

All Skill Levels / Beginner +

Hand-rolled hems are used on lightweight silks, wool, chiffon and organza. A handrolled hem allows delicate fabrics to drape gracefully without machine stitching on the right side of the garment. In this class you will learn this technique and create a
16” X 45” beautiful chiffon scarf. Kit fee to instructor $7 includes silk and thread for your scarf.

#390 Introduction to Serger / Overlock

Bring your serger / overlock machine and its manual to class

Let Terry show you how to enjoy your serger. Gain confidence in threading and in changing tensions and thread types. Learn to identify and solve tension problems, as well as how to use different threads and fabrics. Learn the importance of stitch length and width for different fabrics and threads. Start an example notebook full of sewing samples that reinforce each concept. Be sure to bring your serger and your serger manual.
