You’ll join Fred Bloebaum, designer of the La Fred Pattern Line, as she guides you through the store. We’ll talk briefly about style, color and fabric combinations, and then we’ll look through the store for fabrics, patterns and other supplies that will guarantee you success. Fred brings many years of experience as an instructor in image and color, plus her love of beautiful fabrics, to this event. #410 Sewing with Knits

For advanced beginners - intermediate seamsters - and those curious about sewing with fabulous knits!

Lecture: (410 Series Classes)

This class will demonstrate examples and techniques for working with a wide variety of knits, which Stonemountain is known for carrying lots of! See how to sew mesh knits, slinky, knits with Lycra, as well as lots of the new knits on the market. Learn to tell the difference between singlle, double, and interlock knits. Some of the techniques you'll learn about include seam treatments, cutting and marking, stabilizing seams and hems, waistbands, ribbing, needle and thread selection, and much more. Plus, you'll see an exciting trunk show of knit garments, which will inspire you!

Workshop: (411 Series Classes)
For those who want to practice what you’ve learned in the Sewing with Knits Lecture, you can spend the afternoon stitching the techniques that Fred demonstrated in the morning. Students will receive a supplies list, and create samples of all the wonderful things you can do with knits. If you’ve ever been intimidated by sewing with knits, this series is for you! #415 How to Start Your Own Crafty Business

Do people constantly tell you that you should sell the things you make? Have you always wanted to start your own business but didn't know how? This fun and informative class will teach you the basics on starting your own crafty business. We'll go over many subjects including registering your business and getting a reseller's permit so you can buy your materials tax-free; marketing and promotion; craft shows and trunk shows; how to get a business bank account and how to set up credit card acceptance along with selling to retail stores.

See many wonderful techniques used in creating luxurious lingerie, such as camisoles, tap pants, slips, teddies, robes, and pajamas. You will learn how to apply lace, elastic and other trims, construct spaghetti straps, create lovely seam finishes and sewing with bias. You will see how to work with lingerie fabric such as lace, charmeuse, satin, tricot and other knits and the needles and thread required to sew them. Fred will also bring a beautiful trunk show of elegant lingerie to inspire you.

#430 Recycled Sweaters & Tee Shirt Workshop
With Instructor Fred Bloebaum

All skill levels and ages welcome!

Mine your closets and drawers for inspiration, and give your old or worn out sweaters and tees new life! In this workshop, Fred will demonstrate how to cut up sweaters or other knit garments and combine them with knit fabric, decorative stitching and other trims to create one-of-a-kind sweaters, tee shirts, vests, coats and even dresses! Students may use sergers or conventional sewing machines. Fred will demonstrate how to stabilize cut edges and seams, as well as how to achieve pleasing design elements within the garment. Students will come away with a unique garment, plus the inspiration (and scraps!) to create many more.

#450 Nouveau Sashiko Workshop (Japanese Quilting!)

Prerequisite: basic hand sewing skills

Learn the Japanese Sashiko hand quilting technique and leave with an embellished square that can become a pillow, pocket, or a unique piece for a garment! You will also learn the history of Japanese Sashiko and see a trunk show of garments presenting Sashiko on wearable art. $10 kit fee to instructor.

#460 Simple Shibori I

Learn a quick, fun, easy way to make a gorgeous accent piece of silk or a lovely scarf. Origami folds, pole wrapping, and feather effects will be taught. Then we will use new instant set dyes! The dyes are permanent and very easy to use. The instructor will provide all of the materials including use of dyes, wrapping tools and, and fabric for samples. You will finish the class with a completed silk scarf to incorporate into a garment or give as a gift. Please bring an apron or wear old clothing to this class!

#461 Shibori II Plus Silk Screen

In this more advanced class, students will learn more Shibori techniques such as diagonal folds, stitched resist patterns, and clamp resist. We will learn how to thicken the dyes to use them in silk screens. Add dimension and layered pattern to your fabric! The instructor will provide all of the materials including dyes, materials and, and fabric for samples. You will finish the class with a completed silk scarf to incorporate into a garment or give as a gift. The instructor will show you how to translate the techniques into larger pieces of fabric, use dying to create coordinating fabrics, and how to use Shibori techniques to discharge dark colored fabrics. Please bring an apron or wear old clothing to this class!

The skirt is worn on the bias, but almost all of the sewing is done on the straight of grain. Several variations will be discussed so that you can have a whole new wardrobe of pattern-free skirts. #490 Felted Wool Jacket

For Intermediate Seamsters

Explore the unique process of designing the perfect unstructured jacket using “felted” wool fabrics. Wool fabric, when shrunk, becomes soft and dense and adapts well to simple sewing techniques including reverse appliqué techniques and lap seam construction. Starting from a simple pattern of your choice, your “road map to wearability”, we will learn basic design concepts and apply these ideas to our finished design. Jean will demonstrate ways of creating unique pockets, binding and finishing techniques for you to choose from. Your fabric will be washed and shrunk the first day of class (do not pretreat your fabric). This class has become Jean’s signature class at Stone Mountain and it provides a lot of inspiration and information on working with wool fabrics at Stonemountain.

#601 Pants in a DAY!
With National Sewing Expert Sandra Betzina
$180 class fee / All Day Workshop / 1 session
Recommended for intermediate seamsters

Tired of trying to find pair of pants that fits? Come join Sandra in this hands-on class with the Designer herself! Begin the class by trying on pant and/or jean slopers in different sizes to determine what additional pattern alterations you will need for a flat seat, tummy, high and full hips, sway back, full thighs, etc. You will then cut out the pants or jeans from scrap fabric or muslin. Fit will be refined. Alterations will be transferred to create a master pattern. You now have a pant or jean pattern which fits and can be made again and again. Students should purchase a Today’s Fit pant pattern selected by the snug hip measurement. We will have all sizes of the Vogue Today’s Fit pant and jeans patterns!
